NSWPL Training for Players
Typically, players come into our game and learn ‘on the job’, receiving hints and tips from well-meaning individuals. Not the ideal! Newcastle has benefitted from coaching provided to its younger players by Scott Clarke and the Boules Artistes has held regular training sessions particularly aimed at its women players that has seen a number of players develop and achieve success in State and National competitions. The point is, these efforts will be rewarded!
Training will be available to all that wish to participate and our coaches will tailor the sessions to suit the players. These sessions will not be about receiving ‘tips’ and ‘magic transformations’ but guidance and direction along a path to improvement that requires personal commitment from each individual.
Training for National Teams
All players who have put their names down for selection to national teams work with the coach to determine the particular skills they want to improve, the targets they want to achieve and the time they can commit, both at training sessions and in their own time. Training sessions will involve initial bench-marking and goal setting, then remediation and technique development as well as observed regular and set-piece game play. These sessions may be followed by a competition to test the skills in ‘battle’.
We need to be able to demonstrate player ability from a level playing field across the country to ensure that NSW players are not left out of consideration for representative honours and to take personal opinion out of selection (protecting our player/coaches who may need to participate in the selection meetings).
Importantly, the sessions will include practical instruction of the rules with the expectation that players pass the club umpires course.
Other players will follow a similar path but the requirements may not be as stringent. We understand that not everyone wants to be a champion but many would like to improve but this requires some commitment, too! If you put aside what you practice at training when you play games, because you think you have a better chance of winning, you will never develop and make permanent the good habits and techniques to become the player you would like to be.

FAQs
Are rep players expected to play in NSWPL Competitions (i.e. those on the Calendar) with partners elected by the coach? No! However, the National Coach may request players to consider playing with particular combinations.
Which representative tournaments should I put my name down for? Anything you wish, but your wish is not your command. You must have a reasonable belief that you are able to attend any event for which you are selected and advise immediately if this is not the case. Any travel requirements should be organised by the player as soon as possible to contain costs. We will be trying to influence earlier nomination to give players the opportunity to arrange the best deals for travel as we are an extremely small sport with no funding and there should be little expectation of financial support beyond a contribution for the uniform.
